Inside the Treehouse Studio

A few weeks ago, we blogged about the unique two-story treehouse recording studio built at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, WA, and how its construction was documented on the Animal Planet reality TV show, Treehouse Masters. Now a number of clips and behind-the-scenes videos have surfaced online, providing greater insight, not to mention a tour and a time-lapse of the construction itself.

The treehouse isn't just a few planks either—this amazing facility features a rust-colored metal exterior, textured cork walls for organic sound absorption, and a picture window and deck that overlooks a wild salmon creek below. How many treehouses get interior decorating—or two beds and a composting toilet?

The episode aired February 21 and featured a guest appearance by CeeLo Green, who became the first artist to record in the amazing new space. Since the show taped there, Australian folk pop artist, Vance Joy, recorded the first full album created in the treehouse.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, local pro audio manufacturer Mackie (also based in Woodinville) has a presence in the facility, in the form of MR6mk3 Studio Monitors, a MR10Smk3 subwoofer and a Big Knob Studio Command System. Other gear inside the treehouse includes SRH940 Professional Headphones and SM57, SM7B, KSM44A and KSM137 mics from Shure.

The treehouse is now owned by audio engineer and producer Ryan Hadlock, second-generation owner of the 10-acre Bear Creek Studio property, which is centered around a residential recording barn, where artists such as The Lumineers, Foo Fighters, The Strokes, Soundgarden, and others have recorded music known the world over.
