Dale Gets Ham4Ham Out of Jam

The musical Hamilton is up for 16 Tony Awards and is sold out through next year, but that doesn’t stop the show from doing cool things for fans like a pre-show ticket lottery and mini-performance outside its theater. The lottery—nicknamed #Ham4Ham because winners get a ticket for a mere Hamilton (AKA a $10 bill)—had problems, however, which Dale Pro Audio was brought in to fix.

New York, NY (May 16, 2016)—The musical Hamilton is up for 16 Tony Awards and is sold out through next year, but that doesn’t stop the show from doing cool things for fans like a pre-show ticket lottery and mini-performance outside its theater. The lottery—nicknamed #Ham4Ham because winners get a ticket for a mere Hamilton (AKA a $10 bill)—had problems, however, which Dale Pro Audio was brought in to fix.

The #Ham4Ham events, held outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46th Street in Manhattan, found the show’s performers using megaphones, but given that the lotteries can often attract over 1,000 people, many ticket-buying hopefuls couldn’t hear anything. A better solution was needed, so Derek Healy, house electrician for the Richard Rodgers Theatre, contacted Tim Brown of Dale Pro Audio to discuss possible answers.

Due to the RF congestion of the area—there’s four theatres located on the same block alone, not to mention additional theaters on adjacent streets—a digital system was recommended, and ultimately Sennheiser’s evolution wireless D1 system was selected. Offering up to 15 compatible channels in the license-free 2.4 GHz band, the wireless mic features automatic frequency management and gain control. Healy selected a pair of handheld vocal systems which feature e 835 cardioid capsules to reject feedback and include a convenient mute-switch for easy operation.

The first #Ham4Ham show using the Sennheiser systems featured New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio as guest speaker. Subsequent #Ham4Ham shows have featured Broadway star Terrence Mann, and director/producer/composer J. J. Abrams.
