Gearing Up With “The Trio Of Oz”

Date: 06/11/2015

by Rich Tozzoli. Recently I’ve been working on a recording project that was just so refreshing, I wanted to write about it. Sometimes, especially after being in this crazy biz for a while, each of us can get stale. Sometimes we forget that music is supposed to be creative, inspiring and fun, and that recording projects can often push us into uncomfortable places where we hopefully come out better off than we were going in. And when the mutual parties involved trust each other enough, the technology involved often disappears, allowing the focus to be solely on making great music.  MORE

Review: Sandhill 6011A Active Ribbon Microphone

Date: 05/19/2015

by Rob Tavaglione. Active ribbons are all the rage and for good reason: the inherent bi-directional quality of a figure-eight polar pattern, typically strong mids, and a pleasant top-end tempered with a touch of useful dynamic smoothing plus higher output, lower noise floor and the increased preamp flexibility of active electronics. If you don't have an active ribbon microphone (or preferably, a pair—Blumlein, anyone?), I'm afraid you're really missing out.  MORE

Review: Radial Engineering Firefly Tube Direct Box

Date: 05/19/2015

by Rob Tavaglione. It seems like there’s a lot of cool DI boxes around these days, often sporting tubes and advanced features. Leave it to British Columbia-based Radial Engineering—makers of some wildly popular direct-injection and inter-connecting boxes—to add its Firefly to the trend. And yes—the Firefly has a tube plus numerous other advanced features, most obviously a sporty, memorable handle that kind of looks like a lightning bug's wing.  MORE

Review: Sunburst Gear MM Series Monitor

Date: 03/31/2015

By Strother Bullins. Elite Acoustics Designs’ Sunburst Gear M3BR8 could be the most useful multipurpose monitoring tool I’ve ever used. Is it a studio monitor, instrument monitor, sound reinforcement speaker, Bluetooth-ready portable DJ/KJ rig, remote-location battery powered portable PA, or a three-channel mixer with limited EQ? Actually, it’s all of those and more.  MORE
