Scotts Valley, CA (November 17, 2017)—Universal Audio has introduced its new Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor Compressor plug-in. Created in collaboration with Empirical Labs, the plug-in emulation is designed for UAD hardware and Apollo interfaces as part of UAD Software v9.4.
Introduced in 1993, the Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor is regularly found in studio and live mixing settings, and the new plug-in is intended to provide the features and sound of the original unit’s design. UA’s team started with a complete circuit trace and component study of Emperical Labs founder Dave Derr's selected golden unit, and also analyzed three more Distressors built across the lifetime of the product as it modeled the circuit.
The plug-in allows users to shape guitars, drums, and vocals with various gain reduction variations; color instruments and vocals with “Dist 2” and “Dist 3” modes; apply custom detector filtering; and use plug-in-only features like Dry/Wet parallel processing and Headroom for user-customizable operating level.
Additionally, the plug-in comes with presets from Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio), Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen), Hector Delgado (A$AP Rocky, Selena Gomez) Jimmy Douglass (The Rolling Stones, Roxy Music).
