Academy to Honor Memphis Music Legends

Memphis, TN (August 29, 2007)--Music industry legends--Booker T. & the MG's, producer/arranger Willie Mitchell and singer Irma Thomas--will be honored at The Recording Academy Honors Gala with a Special Legacy presentation to Knox Phillips on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. WMC-TV Channel 5 news anchor Donna Davis will host the event.

Memphis, TN (August 29, 2007)–Music industry legends–Booker T. & the MG’s, producer/arranger Willie Mitchell and singer Irma Thomas–will be honored at The Recording Academy Honors Gala with a Special Legacy presentation to Knox Phillips on Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. WMC-TV Channel 5 news anchor Donna Davis will host the event.

Presenters include Quint Davis, president of Festival Productions and producer of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; Neil Portnow, Recording Academy president; and Memphis producing/songwriting duo, Isaac Hayes and David Porter.

Slated to perform at the gala are husband-and-wife duo, Donald Bryant and Ann Peebles; Joey DeFrancesco; Aaron Neville; John Prine; Kenny Wayne Shepherd; Angie Stone; and Kirk Whalum. Additionally, music engineer, producer and record executive, Knox Phillips, who took a lead role in establishing the Academy’s Memphis Chapter, will be acknowledged with a Special Legacy presentation.

The Recording Academy Honors Award was established to “celebrate outstanding individuals whose work embodies excellence and integrity and who have improved the environment for the creative community.” The biennial gala supports the Memphis Chapter’s ongoing advocacy, education and professional development programs.
