Melbourne, Australia (April 13, 2009)--The Telstra Dome recently hosted a $3 million dollar Sensation White Party, a mandatory white clothing rave where more than 40,000 people in attendance felt the incessant beat due to a massive 360º Adamson PA.
Reportedly, it was the largest dance party Australia had ever seen. "Ten hours of house music, lights, laser shows, live performers and DJ's, guests were entertained by a show that was a cross between a pop concert, Cirque du Soleil and a dance event, with live performances by Ben Morris, Erick Morillo, Smilie + Course, Fedde le Grand, Marco V and Tydi," described Lisca Stutterhein of Sensations.
Nick Hutchinson, project manager from Norwest Production, and Ben Brouwers, audio consultant from ID&T, teamed up with Ewan McDonald, the senior audio engineer at Norwest Productions and technical support member of Adamson Systems Engineering, to create the audio system.
Eight line arrays were flown from the Stageco stage structure around its main centerpiece, each consisting of seven Adamson Y18 line array modules with seven Adamson Y10 line array modules at the bottom of each array. As with any dance party, low-end is a core ingredient, and 32 Adamson T21 dual 21" subwoofers, 4 of which were supplied by Team 108 in Singapore to Norwest Productions, were employed to handle the task.
"ID&T was not familiar with the Adamson T21 Subs, therefore placing 32 subwoofers where 64 are generally used, seemed like a big risk" commented MacDonald. "For those that have not heard the Adamson T21 Subs, where others use two subwoofers, with the Adamson T21 Sub, you only need one."
The job of front fill was taken on by 8 two-box stacks of L-Acoustics Kudo boxes; a half-dozen Kudo delay clusters were also employed. On the VIP side of the stage, four additional clusters were used for the VIP section and to service the upper balcony area. The entire Adamson system was run off Lab.gruppen fp6400s and the L-Acoustics with 10,000Q amplifiers. With the high number of speakers employed, along with weight restrictions of the video structure, four of the 12 amplifier racks were also flown.
System alignment and tuning was taken care of by Ewan McDonald, using Smaart 6, a MacBook Pro, RION Microphone Calibrator and a MOTU Traveler Audio Interface. The FOH console was a Yamaha PM5D, which was also used to provide multiple record feeds for the event. White custom-built Shure UR series radio mics were also utilized.
