After two weeks of work, reports James, who is CEO of British company Music Candy, "Finally, one Tuesday morning after a full night of mixing and trying various things in our Upper East Side studio, I sent off the rough mix as an mp3 and went to bed at 8 a.m. When I woke, I had many emails to say, 'We love it'" from Morgan and his executive producer, Jonathan Wald, who were in L.A. at the time recording an Oprah Winfrey interview.

"Musically, the object was to create a strong theme that wasn't too newsy sounding, as directed by Jonathan, 'not too hard and not too light,' something a little unexpected for CNN," says Bellapaisiotis, Music Candy creative director. "They wanted something that could sound more like a song than a theme, but have a five-note sonic logo on the end."

James continues, "In order to create the big sound CNN were looking for, I wanted live strings on the Sonic Identity and Main Theme track." Nearly two dozen musicians were recorded, including Grammy-nominated Jesse Mills, the group captain and lead violinist, drummer Brian Delaney of the New York Dolls, and guitarist Pete McCann.

Piers Morgan Tonight is being shown to 211 countries around the world three times a day, observes James. "The thought that your music will be playing all over the world, in some instances to countries that you have never even heard before, can paralyze your creative process. So you try to minimize the scale of the project to a size that fits your recording studio..."

James and Bellapaisiotis have written numerous themes for TV and radio and have been published in over 28 countries around the world.
