Alfacam YLE Take Lawo to Beijing

Rastatt, Germany (July 30, 2008)--Belgian TV service provider Alfacam will use Lawo's mc≤66 consoles for HD transmission of the Beijing Olympics. Finnish broadcaster YLE will also be using Lawo equipment for its broadcasts from Beijing.

Alfacam will not only be handling the production of different types of international HD feeds, but also the worldwide broadcast of the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing. To meet the demands of the Olympics, Alfacam will be on site with a large number of OB vans. Nine of the Beijing-based Alfacam OB vans, as well as the PPU and four additional audio control rooms, are outfitted with Lawo equipment.

Because of their deployment in Beijing, plus simultaneous obligations to clients in Europe, Alfacam substantially increased its fleet of OB vans. In 2007 and 2008 alone, 10 new trucks and a new Portable Production Unit (PPU), equipped with mc≤66 consoles, were commissioned to meet a series of upcoming productions.

The core of the YLE system will be a Nova73 HD routing matrix, to which five digital mixing consoles will be connected: a Lawo mc≤66 for YLE TV 2, a Lawo zirkonXL for YLE TV FST-5 and a Lawo zirkon for YLE Radio Suomi. For Radio Extrem (X3M), a YLE radio station broadcasting in Swedish, an extra zirkon console will be available, as well as an additional mc≤66 for the Swedish TV station SVT VT. YLE will broadcast 790 hours of coverage--440 on TV and 350 on radio.

Matti Helkamaa, senior technical advisor at YLE, and responsible for system planning and collaboration with Lawo, comments, "Lawo provide an extremely flexible solution to routing: the Nova73 HD connects all Lawo consoles, so multiple signals can be handled in parallel. In total, we are talking here about handling 548 input signals--a very complex production that will be made easy, thanks to the Lawo equipment."
