Buddy Miles (Electric Flag, Band of Gypsies) jams using an Aviom A-16II personal mixer for his monitors at Love In: The Musical, a theatrical celebration of the music of the Summer of Love recently held at Birch North Park Theatre in San Diego. San Diego, CA (September 26, 2007)–Aviom and Mogami were among the technical elements in the audio system for the production of Love In: A Musical Celebration, a theatrical performance of the music of 1967 featuring legendary artists. Love In was recently staged at Birch North Park Theatre.
Featuring British Invasion greats Peter & Gordon, Jesse Colin Young (of the Youngbloods), Buddy Miles (formerly with Electric Flag and Jimi Hendrix), the legendary psychedelic band Strawberry Alarm Clock, and a host of additional artists, Love In served as the performance foundation for an ambitious video project that that will ultimately be available on DVD.
The event used Aviom’s Pro16 personal mixing system, with an Aviom digital snake distributing the mixes to a Yamaha PM5D console outfitted with an AVIOM16/o-Y1 A-Net Interface Card.
The Mogami cable assortment included 47 shielded quarter-inch to quarter-inch cables of various lengths for use on guitars, keyboards, direct boxes, and additional equipment. A dozen 25-foot XLR microphone cables were also utilized.
Adams Entertainment, which also produced last year’s live documentary/concert Primal Twang: The History of the Guitar, filmed the Love Inperformances for a 2008 release. The show’s audio producer, Henry Austin of Professional Production Associates, designed a system that would serve the needs of both the live and recorded elements of the production.
“I selected Aviom for this mission-critical gig for several reasons,” Austin explained. “Traditional monitor wedges will typically cause an inordinate amount of leakage from the stage and the cumulative effect of this leakage ruins the recording process and negatively impacts the FOH audio quality as well. My design integrated acrylic shields and sound absorbent material and this contributed greatly to the separation and clarity of the live mix and recording. Without the Aviom personal mixing system, these additional isolations would not have been noticed.”
Austin also explained how the Aviom personal mixing system worked well in conjunction with the Future Sonics in-ear monitoring system chosen for the project. “The Future Sonics IEMs complement the Aviom output circuit and really sound ‘hi-fi,’ he said. “It was this combination that helped sell the idea to the artists, who were unfamiliar with the technology. Once they heard it, they were sold. Each band member could control his personal blend, which allowed Bob Meyers, the monitor engineer, to focus on the wireless mixes.
” Love Inwas a really special endeavor that was inspired by the success of Primal Twang,” Austin continues. “In addition to some really electrifying performances, the show also included the projection of rare archival footage supplied by Wolfgang’s Vault, which did wonders to further re-create the entire experience. With all the extraordinary musicianship this project encompassed, I wanted to make certain we had the best possible cable on stage with us. Mogami is recognized as the de-facto standard throughout the world’s greatest recording studios, and as Love In will ultimately go to DVD, I considered it essential for this project as well.
“In addition to the sonic integrity the cable provides, I love the build quality and its low noise. Mogami cable provides the ideal tonal balance–clear and without coloration, and this typically results in increased presence. I also like the way the cable coils and the way it lays on the stage. This is important so that you don’t end up with a rat’s nest.”
