"We looked at a number of [audio monitoring] options," reports production manager/mix engineer Mark Bogart, "and went with a 5.1-channel PMC system that comprises a pair of MB2S-A active monitors for left and right, plus an MB2S-AC for the center channel, and a matching subwoofer. We are very happy with the results. The system sounds excellent!"
The new audio control room, along with a video control suite and six edit suites, was designed by acoustician Jeff Cooper. It measures 22 by 24 feet with a 13-foot ceiling. Attached is a 9- by 11-foot voiceover room, as well as a machine room. The room centers around a Euphonix System 5 Digital Post-Production Console. "We built the room primarily to handle the taping of our half-hour daily program," Bogart explains. "Future plans include multi-track recording and post-production for broadcast, music and DVD projects. We plan to add a [Steinberg] Nuendo system, as the budget allows."
"In general, I have been disappointed with the performance of studio mains and have been relying on near-fields," Bogart stresses. "But our PMC MB2S system is a perfect match for the room. The accuracy and imaging is impressive, which is extremely important for live mixing."
