Italy (February 14, 2006)–This February the eyes of the world are currently on Turin in northern Italy as it hosts the Olympic Winter Games. While witnessing the world’s greatest athletes, those attending will experience some of the most sophisticated audio systems currently in use on mainland Europe, and Community loudspeakers are a sizable part of those systems.
Stadio Comunale The 26,000 capacity Stadio Comunale is the venue for both the opening and closing ceremonies. Originally built just after the First World War, the stadium was stripped back to a mere skeleton and fully refurbished for the Winter Olympics. 32 units of custom R.5 loudspeakers using Community’s proprietary M200 driver are mounted at the tip of the cantilever roof structure to cover the entire stadium.
The second venue is the Palavela, which was designed for the “Italia ’61” expo that marked the centenary of the Italian unification. The venue will accommodate 6,600 spectators for the figure skating and short track speed skating competitions which take place on the 60 x 30 meter rink. The reconfigured sound system uses 32 iBOX iHP3594H’s, 26 iBOX iHP1596’s, 20 iBOX iHP1294’s, 18 CPL42-94’s, and 30 CLOUD6 ceiling speakers for the main stadium PA system. The voice address system uses four Community RSH462’s.
Finally, the ice hockey competition will be held in the Palasport Olimpico. Due to the numerous levels, the complexity of the venue and the reflective surfaces, the actual design including precise speaker locations and aiming angles took many months. The resulting system utilizes 18 units of SLS980, 36 units of SLS960 and 62 units of SLS920 all from Community’s fully wavefront coherent, fully horn loaded Solutions series.
