Bray, Ireland (August 2, 2006)–Ireland’s leading operator of outside broadcast mobile services, Observe, is using its new high-definition OB unit, with full digital audio facilities, to record 10 HD TV specials featuring The Irish Tenors for broadcast on RT….
HD1 is Observe’s new flagship vehicle is a 53-foot, triple-expander, semi-trailer truck with full studio facilities for live broadcasting, including 24 HD cameras and a 52-fader Studer Vista 8 digital live audio production console. The huge OBV recently spent 10 days at the famous Ardmore Studios in Bray, just south of Dublin, recording performances by tenors Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Karl Scully, as well as a long list of guest artists including Hayley Westenra, Katharine Jenkins, Paul Carrack, Shayne Ward and even Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The production is being made by Mind The Gap Productions for RT…, and the 10 60-minute programs will soon take over the slot of Ireland’s most popular TV show, The Late Late Show, as it rests for the summer.
In addition to the guest soloists, Observe head of sound Colm Flynn has been recording a 30-piece orchestra, five-piece band and string quartet. The console has capacity for up to 480 inputs, so Flynn has had more than enough capability for this show. “We have 80 mic line inputs built into the truck, plus 40 more in our flightcased stagebox, and I can bring in additional I/O if I need it.”
Flynn has now finally fulfilled a long-held desire to install a top-flight mobile Studer audio console. “When specifying the HD1, after looking at all the leading marques, we decided to go for the Vista 8. We preferred the look of the console and the way it worked; in fact, the ergonomics was a key factor as it made the Vista 8 the easiest surface to learn for all the freelance engineers that will use the vehicle.”
