New York (December 22, 2004)–Following in the path of the strong-selling Live Aid DVD box set, the 1985 USA For Africa charity single, “We Are The World,” will be the subject of a 4-hour, 2 DVD set covering the recording sessions behind the tune. Entitled We Are The World: The Story Behind The Song, the DVD will street on February 1, roughly the twentieth anniversary of the original recording.
The sessions brought together 45 of the biggest names in popular music at the time, including Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bob Geldof, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Bruce Springstein, Tina Turner, Harry Belafonte and Stevie Wonder. The event was conducted and produced by Quincy Jones.
Proceeds from the DVD will again go to USA for Africa, “We Are The World’s” sponsor, where they will be earmarked to help ease hunger and fight AIDS in Africa and poverty related issues here in the United States.
The DVD will include an expanded version the original “Making-of Special” on the recording session; the tenth Anniversary documentary; and more than two hours of bonus footage that will include the individual artists rehearsing and recording their solos, behind-the-scenes camaraderie and banter, and insight into the recording process.
Features will allow viewers to access and cross-reference the material, and a Karaoke section will allow them to add their own solos to the chorus and instrumentals. Footage of “We Are The World” being performed at the American Music Awards, The Grammys and Live Aid concert will be included as well.
