on One Life To Live.New York, NY (May 5, 2009)--Paul Glass, supervising music director for ABC's One Life to Live, typically calls on Jim Flynn Rentals (JFR) for audio technology and solutions when performances by artists like Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and the Pussycat Dolls appear in the storyline.
The musical performances on the network's longest-running soap--which just celebrated its 40th anniversary--can vary dramatically in terms of production. Once Glass locks a date with the artist's management, he gets to work compiling all the backline musical and audio equipment required for the one-day rehearsal, soundcheck and shoot: "We are on such a tight schedule; if I'm setting up at 6 am, and I have talent showing up at 9:30-10:00, I don't have time to make excuses. We have the artists for one day and everything needs to go as planned. Jim Flynn not only understands what our requirements are for recording, but also how our studio is structured and what we need, in terms of cabling and snakes, to send splits to the monitors and to the control room."
Glass continues, "What I really rely on Jim Flynn for is his advice on the best ways I can do what I'm trying to do easily. We'll order microphones and monitoring systems, and we do the recordings live on the floor with a JFR Pro Tools rig, which is great since it's totally self-contained; you just roll it in and it basically sets itself up."
Most of all, Glass appreciates JFR's accountability on these potentially stressful live music shoots. "I'm dealing with payroll, travel, licensing and scheduling, etc., and so to know that I don't have to go through the crates when they get here to make sure there's not stuff missing, is truly great," he adds. "All of the equipment I need will be there and working perfectly. No matter what it takes, he makes it happen."
