Margarita Mix Brings Film Sound to Ford Commercial

Santa Monica, CA (November 25, 2008)--Sean Melia and Jeff Levy of Margarita Mix recently collaborated to provide sound design and a 5.1 mix for The New Girl, one of the winners in a short film competition sponsored by Ford, advertising agency JWT Team Detroit, and global digital entertainment studio Filmaka.

Directed by Jon Hill, the film is one of 10 winners chosen from nearly 400 scripts submitted by filmmakers from 28 countries, with the filmmakers given the task of featuring a Ford Mustang in their work. Sixty-second trailers for the films aired during episodes of NBC's Knight Rider. The grand prize-winning director, who will be chosen later this month, will have an opportunity to direct a promotional film for the 2010 Mustang.

The New Girl tells the story of a woman trying to regain the affections of her husband after he falls under the spell of the mysterious "Vanessa." "We used sound both to help set the tone and to ratchet up the tension between the husband and the wife," recalled Melia. "We also utilized EQ and the 5.1 surround field to give viewers a more immersive perspective."

Due to its extended length, The New Girl gave Melia and Levy an opportunity to build varying textures into the mix. "Often, the short duration of broadcast commercials puts limitations on the dynamic range," explained Levy. "With this project, we had the room to really let the dynamics play out. It has the fullness of a feature film."
