Features

The Meyer UPM-1P is a biamped, time-aligned self-powered speaker. It contains two 5" cone speakers connected by a passive filter. Frequencies of 500 Hz and below are shared equally, but frequencies of 500 Hz to 2 kHz appear only in the upper woofer. This alleviates off-axis vertical frequency loss when both woofers share identical information in the mid-frequency zone.

The high-frequency component is a 1" titanium driver active at frequencies of 2 kHz and above. The specs offered by the UPM-1P manual are as follows: Maximum SPL at 1 meter, 112 dB continuous/123 dB transient; frequency range 60 Hz to 22 kHz; amplifiers-type: Class AB; continuous power supply: LF section, 225 Watts, HF volume: 0.2 cubic feet; constructed of multilayer birch.

The UPM-1P is a small cabinet, measuring only 18" tall, 7.7" deep, 6.8" wide and weighing only 21 lb. It is an attractive cabinet with a black matte finish and black acoustic foam grille, which can be removed to inspect the components. There are three rig points on the cabinet located top, bottom and one on one side. Each rig point has two interchangeable thread patterns - American and metric. Additionally, the UPM-1P can be stand-mounted using the bottom rig point.

The back panel is clean and succinct. There are two Neutrik twist-and-lock PowerCon connectors, the first being the AC main in, the second being a parallel unswitched connector for purpose of powering adjoining speakers. Also present is a recessed/rotating voltage selector, but no on/off switch. The speaker is either plugged in to be on or unplugged to be off. Audio connectors are XLR female in, and XLR male out to adjoining speakers.

Meyer offers a hardware/software package for remote monitoring and operation of the UPM-1P (as well as any other appropriately outfitted Meyer product). It is a Windows-based PC application that displays input sensitivity, amplifier power activities, limiter status and can mute the speaker(s). The back panel is only about 3" or 4" high - the rest of the rear of the assembly are amplifier heat fins.

In use

I decided to test the UPM-1P on a Fourth of July show at a local baseball stadium. I wanted to torture this speaker under the worst of Arizona conditions - lots of heat, lots of dust and lots of people. The first application was as a cue speaker for the monitor system. While doing line check, I paid special attention to the frequency response of the various inputs - I found the UPM-1P to be extremely smooth in all ranges. It was very friendly in the LF range of the kick drum, as well as being very accurate in the MF range of vocals, keyboards, brass and guitars.

As the show got underway, I sampled various monitor mixes through it and found it to be remarkably clear. At set change, it was time for the next torture test, so we moved the pair of Meyer speakers to a spectator seating area where composite house mix was pumped through them at a fairly good volume. I was approximately 20 feet from them and I was amazed at their clarity, response on-and off-axis and ability to handle loud transients with no clipping or distortion. They were able to reproduce a true 60 Hz in the LF and had good sparkle in the HF. As expected, the heat fins got a little hot, but it was a 110 degree day.

Summary

Once again, Meyer Sound has come through with another amazing product. The UPM-1P is a little powerhouse with great clarity, frequency response, and quality.
