Santa Barbara, CA (March 23, 2009)--Mixosaurus DAW Drums KIT A, a 122-gigabyte sampled acoustic drum library featuring over 80,000 stereo samples organized into 1,800 programmable Kontakt Player instruments, is now shipping.
KIT A comprises 24-bit recordings of 20 distinct microphone positions (160,000 separate signals in all) including close mic, stereo PZM, three unique overhead configurations (using Schoeps MK4 small diaphragm, Coles 4038 ribbon, and Neumann U 67 tube microphones), and stereo Teldex room (for live ambience). Each drum was played with an array of dynamic and timbral variations. The hi-hat, for example, offers 29 different articulations.
All 80,000 samples are of a single 14-piece drum kit--the goal being to put virtually every possible sonic nuance of an acoustic drum kit into the hands of computer-based recording musicians and live e-drum performers.
Uwe Lietzow, founder and CEO of Mixosaurus as well as a drummer and engineer, explains his unconventional single-kit approach. "A great-sounding drum kit is capable of producing a nearly infinite number of articulations, and is usable in a wide variety of musical styles. So rather than hand musicians the typical laundry list of genre-specific sounds, I wanted to give them a truly deep instrument capable of responding accurately and expressively to their input."
The samples are organized into 1,800 Kontakt Player patches, which provide control over multiple parameters, including dynamics, filter, envelope, and tuning. Up to seven alternating samples are available for every sound in the library. Up to 64 individual patches can be loaded into a single Kontakt Multi, with both stereo and multi-channel output bussing.
The system, which comes pre-loaded on its own high-speed hard drive (external or internal), is available for both Mac and PC, and supports VST, AU, RTAS, DXi, and standalone Kontakt Player formats. To afford musicians instant access to the vast array of material, KIT A is compatible with a variety of standard MIDI drum map formats, including Addictive Drums, BFD, DFH, EZ Drummer, and General MIDI. Mapping support for popular e-drum kits, such as those by Roland and Yamaha, is also provided.
