St. Paul, MN (January 29, 2004)–Continuing its mission to offer students one of the most advanced recording and production programs in the country, Musictech College has opened its all-digital 32-track Digidesign Pro Tools HD Studio 10, equipped with a Digidesign Control 24. Completed last summer, Studio 10 is the newest addition to Musictech’s state-of-the-art recording complex that includes both digital and analog recording technology.
“It’s key for anyone who wants to work in the recording industry to have hands-on experience with the various technologies they will encounter in a professional recording studio,” said Michael McKern, director of Musictech College. “Studio 10 gives our students access to the most advanced recording technology and helps them develop the broad range of skills and knowledge they need to work in the recording industry.”
The HD system in Studio 10 complements a growing collection of Pro Tools systems at Musictech College, which has included Pro Tools in its curriculum since 1995. The studio itself features an acoustically isolated control room and three performance areas–a large main room, a smaller vocal or instrumental room and an isolation booth for horns or percussion. The studio is open daily from 9 am to Midnight for instruction or independent projects.
Acoustic isolation presented a challenge, which was overcome by designing and building Studio 10 to commercial studio standards using the “room within a room” concept. The floors and ceiling of the control room are floating, with the floor elevated eight inches above the performance space and the ceiling on iso mounts to keep sound transmission to a minimum. The new doors to the studio are specially designed with lead cores to ensure very little sound leaks into the common areas of the studio complex.
Studio 10 was designed by McKern, in collaboration with faculty members Scott Jarrett, Chopper Black, Rob Schlette and studio manager Scott Hess. Architectural design was completed by Merle Hansen with Minnapolis-based Collins Hansen Architects.
