Nashville, TN (July 21, 2004)–The all-star engineer and producer panel has been announced for the second Vocal Microphone Invitational, to be held July 22nd at Belmont University’s Oceanway Nashville Studio A. From the studio world, Ben Fowler (Michael McDonald, Trace Adkins, Joe Nichols), Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Nickel Creek) and Elmo Ramos Jr. (Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Wu Tang Clan, Tito Puente Jr, HBO Boxing, and Les Miserables) will bring their years of experience to the discussions. On the sound reinforcement side, Johnny O. Garcia (FOH-Diamond Rio) and Hugh Johnson (FOH-Vince Gill) will join the panel.
3D Audio’s Lynn Fuston will moderate the panel, guiding discussion of microphone selection and application. The audience will be invited to participate in this unique opportunity to pick some of the best brains in the business. Attendance is free and open to the audio engineering community, students and NAMM attendees.
In last year’s hugely successful Vocal Microphone Invitational, the marriage of voice and studio microphone was explored. This year, the event is expanded to include not only studio miking but also wireless and stage microphones for live performance. Sponsors for the event are ADK, AKG, CAD and Shure. This year’s presentations will be similar in format to last year’s event, with a male and female vocalist on hand to perform on demand, their a cappella voices used to demonstrate differences between the microphones. Participating manufacturers will be given equal opportunity to make presentations, call upon the vocalists and will have an exhibit area with hardware, literature, and eager personnel ready to answer attendees’ queries.
In addition to the main presentations, a second live demo station designed for SR engineers will be available in a Studio A isolation booth during the breaks. Wired and wireless microphones for stage will be available with a console and monitor wedge for hands on experimentation. Additionally, a personal monitoring system will allow engineers to use their “ears” for these evaluations.
The schedule of presentations is:
12:30 pm Doors Open
1:00 – 1:30 pm ADK
1:50-2:20 pm Shure
2:40-3:10 pm CAD
3:30-4:00 pm AKG
4:15-5:30 Engineer and Producer Panel
Clair Brothers Nashville is providing ace technical assistance for the event, with additional expertise from the AES Nashville section. Attendance is open and free for the greater Nashville engineering community, students and attendees of NAMM’s Summer Session.
