On Friday, Apple released Snow Leopard, its latest Macintosh OS X operating system (10.6 for those keeping score at home). While the update is said to be faster and incorporates a number of new features, it has been met with uncertainty by the pro audio community, fearful of upgrading only to discover that an essential piece of hardware or software won’t work.
To that end, many pro audio manufacturers spent the weekend releasing updates or confirming whether their current product lines are compatible with Snow Leopard. As of today (August 31), here’s a brief rundown of where to check the compatibility of a number of pro audio products, arranged by manufacturer:

• Tascam is said to be working away on updates, most current issues being USB-related.
• Apple Logic Studio reportedly works fine.
• While Avid is currently still working on updates and recommends that its users hold off on installing Snow Leopard, some scattered user reports suggest that Pro Tools LE 8.0 cs3 works. If you plan to experiment with it, clearly you should proceed with caution (and plenty of backups).
