Haven, WI (October 11, 2004)–Larry Schmidt, owner of Tallahassee, FL-based Reel Rock Productions, recently provided sound reinforcement at Pete Dye Plaza, an outdoor zone for live music and cocktail schmoozing at Whistling Straits, the host course of the 86th PGA Championship. While golfers might debate what club was needed to get some distance at the course, Schmidt choce a self-powered ISIS WideLine rig from QSC to send sound as far as he needed.
“I mixed for the event at a distance of 300 feet from the stage,” Schmidt said, giving accurate measure to the span between his console and talent up on the risers almost to the inch. “Much like a corporate job, the client requested that everything technical be kept out of sight as much as possible. With a conventional system, my out-of-the-way mix position may have been a problem, because I probably would have killed everyone in the front of the audience. But with the WideLine, everything was equidistant in terms of SPLs. What I was hearing at 300 feet was the same as the sound in the first row.”
The foundation of Reel Rock’s audio blueprint at the PGA Championship was formed by a pair of ISIS 215PCM subwoofers left and right; each coupled with four flown WL-2102 ISIS WideLine enclosures operating in a biamped configuration. The subs and their mated full-range boxes were deployed at a rate of two and eight per side respectively.
The distance between the front-of-house mix position and the arrays may have been 300 feet, but that was as the crow flies. In reality, the signal path took a more circuitous route, winding 600 feet around corners and under a road. Utilizing a QSControl.net network audio system, Reel Rock used fiber-optic cabling, while simultaneously integrating all system control, monitoring, and processing functions with the rig’s pair of BASIS 922az units.
Despite dramatic changes in weather over the course of the championship–pouring rain one moment, winds and sunshine the next–Reel Rock’s WideLine rig played on without pause for nearly two weeks, including practice rounds.
