Opelika, AL (July 13, 2006)–Quantegy, Inc is offering for sale a number of vintage analog and digital recorders formerly belonging to the 3M company. Quantegy, acquired the assets of the 3M magnetic division 10 years ago when 3M ceased magnetic media production. From their Testing and Evaluation lab, which included a number of 2-track and multitrack tape machines from manufacturers like Sony, Studer, Mitsubishi and 3M.
Most of the machines available can be viewed at www.quantegy.com/usedgear. Not shown on the web page are Sony PCM-1620 and -1630 processors (no DMRs), a 3M digital 4-track and an additional Studer A-800. Quantegy reports that the Studer heads are either brand new or have very few hours on them, with no discoloration of the erase heads and no evidence of flat spots on the rec/play heads.
All machines will be sold as is and there is no guarantee of any kind, though Quantegy Audio products manager, Mike Porter, says he feels that “A very decent Studer 24 track could be made from two of the machines shown in on the page.” A purchaser could either rebuild the machines or use them for parts. Many of the rubber parts of the machines will have to be replaced due to aging.
The custom test gear shown on the overbridges of the available Studer B-67s will go with the machines.
“We will entertain any reasonable (and some unreasonable) offers,” said Porter, who adds that interested parties should contact him directly at 615-656-4075.
