Nashville, TN (December 19, 2006)–Rascal Flatts bassist Jay DeMarcus recently opened The Grip, a full-service, private recording studio in Nashville, built and designed by Carl Tatz Design. The Grip features a main control room with a tracking area and three booths, a drum area, a lounge and kitchen, and an editing suite. The Grip design team used Auralex Acoustics treatment products in the studio, including the Custom ProPanels and pArtScience SpaceCouplers.
Pictured in The Grip, Custom ProPanels are on the far left as well as on the ceiling, pArtScience Space Couplers are pictured inside the window booth.Designed by Russ Berger for Auralex, the SpaceCoupler optimizes acoustical environments for a wide range of performance and recording styles. By providing an acoustical boundary interaction between loosely coupled spaces, the SpaceCoupler generates a low level reverberant tail to create a full, well-developed sound even in small footprint spaces. Auralex’s ProPanels are fabric-covered absorptive panels available in a variety of sizes and colors.
“In the drum area, I wanted to create the illusion, acoustically, of a larger space,” said Carl Tatz, owner of Carl Tatz Designs. “So I used several SpaceCouplers, which allows the space to sound bigger than it is. Aesthetically appealing, Auralex’s ProPanels were used in areas where additional absorption was needed, giving the studio a really nice look.”
In another tracking space at The Grip, pArtScience SpaceCouplers are pictured on the left as well as on the ceiling, the Custom ProPanels are depicted on the right. The Grip is equipped for tracking and mixing sessions with Digidesign Pro Tools HD 5 Accel (v.6.9.3), a 32-fader Pro Control, Apogee AD-16s, Digidesign 192s (32 In, 48 Out), Apogee Big Ben, Neve 8816 Summing, Dynaudio M1s with Bryston 4B, Dynaudio BM12s Subs, Yamaha NS-10Ms and Tannoy Reveals. Instruments include a Ludwig 4-piece house drum kit, Vintage Rhodes Suitcase Electric Piano, Vintage Wulitzer Electric Piano, Yamaha C-7 Grand Piano (by request), Hammond XK-3 Organ w/ 2101 Leslie, Various Electric, Bass, and Acoustic Guitars and various New and Vintage Keyboards. The studio also features an array of virtual instruments including Synthogy Ivory piano, Spectrasonics Stylus RMX, Native Instruments Guitar Rig, and FXExpansion BFD.
