Sanken Intros Surround System Using Two CUW-180 Microphones

Las Vegas (April 19, 2004)--To satisfy the demand for Surround recording, Sanken has designed the new CUW-180 double 180° cardioid condenser microphone, and will be showing the new product at the NAB Convention this week. Surround sound for broadcast and film has become quite popular, but creating realistic multichannel soundtracks in post-production from traditional microphone sources has proven problematic, time consuming, and unnatural. With the CUW-180's two cardioid condenser microphones in one body, each of the 180° capsules is independently adjustable, providing a versatile microphone for a variety of surround applications.

Two CUW-180 mics capture four channels of Left, Right, and Surround Left, Surround Right program simultaneously, with four independently adjustable signals. Each capsule can be rotated with a 15 degree detent to adjust the X-Y angle, while maintaining exact phase coherence. In the Sanken Surround system, one microphone is used for L and R, while a second microphone is used for rear SL and SR.

The essential phase coherence for L and R is rigidly maintained, while allowing the front and rear microphones to be positioned for the particular situation. To add another source for a hard front Center channel, an optional mic holder is available, and Sanken manufactures a complete line of shotgun microphones for this purpose. For location Surround recording, a variety of windscreens and shock-mounts are available. The entire compact Sanken Surround package can be mounted on one mic stand or hand grip and weighs approximately 1.3 kg.

A demonstration of a 5.1 environmental recording by Mr. Shinichiro Ogata, NHK audio engineer, using the Sanken system is taking place at The Surround Broadcast Conference, a one-day 5.1 Broadcast seminar held on April 18, at the Alexis Park Hotel in Las Vegas. Registration is available online at www.surroundpro.com.
