Zurich (February 9, 2004)–Swiss recording artist David M. Taylor has completed two film soundtracks for Shell Renewables using the virtual studio software Reason from Propellerhead Software. Taylor employed Reason to compose, produce and mix the soundtracks, which will broadcast on the Web and be pressed onto 5000 DVDs going to schools across the UK.
Built to Last was a corporate video annual report covering Shell’s efforts in the wind and solar area and was underlain with drum ‘n’ bass and ambient music created in Reason.
“We ran Reason live slaved to Digidesign Pro Tools during the composition and dub process because it is the only program tight enough to handle countless drum ‘n’ bass loops going at high speeds,” said Taylor. “It also gave me total flexibility. I mixed all the music within Reason because the RV7000 reverb is so good and I could do everything with total recall.”
The second film–The Green Design Challenge–is a documentary covering a competition designed to encourage more girls to become engineers. 5000 DVDs of the program will be distributed to schools all over England. In this project, composer David M. Taylor was asked to create original music to replace the library music originally used by the director.
“They wanted real brass and drums for a funky feel, as well as energetic rave music,” explained Taylor. “We used Recycle to get some real brass performances into the Dr.Rex loop player and then created our own melodies. And we used our own ‘Real Drum’ library–programming it in ReDrum. So we were able to do the job for less than the cost of clearing the original music rights. They got a very reasonable deal. But I think it has opened their eyes to the power of original composition and the efficiency of our working methods based around broadband, Apple Macs, Digidesign Pro Tools, and Reason. We’re confident that we’ll be doing more in this area.”
