Originally released in hardware form (and reviewed by PAR editor Rich Tozzoli), the UPM-1 is now available in a new plug-in version in VST (PC and Mac), RTAS (PC and Mac) and Mac-only AU formats. Like the hardware original, it is conceived for broadcasters whose material is transmitted in fold-down-compatible 5.1 surround, including archive stereo material, effects and jingles.
Rather than relying on reverb and phase manipulation, the UPM-1 uses a unique algorithm which “analyzes the stereo input material and separates ambient sounds from the direct sounds: what might broadly be referred to as the ‘distant’ and ‘close-miked’ sounds,” explains SoundField documentation.
As with the original hardware unit, the plug-in can adjust relative levels of direct sound and front and rear ambient sound in any final 5.1 mix with continuous software rotary controls for Width and Center channel divergence. Further, Level, Mute and Solo controls are provided for each channel.
