Knebworth, UK (August 23, 2004)–SSE Hire, the Birmingham-based SR company, was on hand recently for an unusual promotional event for Red Bull: “The Soap Box Derby.” The oddball event came on the heels of last summer’s Red Bull show in Hyde Park: “The Flugtag,” where competitors constructed homemade flying machines in order to take part in the competition. This year’s challenge was to build karts that could complete a downhill racetrack in record time.
Themed karts were the order of the day, with ideas ranging from mad to plain crazy, including vampires, trifles, The Flintstones, hotdogs, snails and countless others. The winners, ‘The Volvet Underground,’ triumphed as they glided past the finish line claiming first place position in their vole-mouse-themed kart.
If the vehicles were homemade and gerry-rigged, the audio system SSE provided certainly wasn’t. Bringing color commentary to the crowd was a Nexo GeoT system, with mixing handled digitally using an Innovason Compact Live SY40 desk.
SSE Director Chris Beale commented, “Everyone had a great time. The weather was hot and so were the drivers! The Geo system covered Knebworth Park perfectly and Murray Walker’s commentary came over loud and clear.”
