UK Posts Record Single Sales

London, UK (November 6, 2007)--Organizations representing the record labels, retailers and official charts in the UK reported a record-breaking week of sales. Digital downloads may have revitalized the market, but physical sales still make the hits, according to the figures.

Hit singles from Leona Lewis, Take That and McFly helped the UK music industry to a record-breaking week for singles last week, according to figures released by the Official UK Charts Company. A record 1.7m downloads were sold last week, reportedly making it the biggest ever week for downloads sales, and the biggest week for singles this year.

UK record labels body the BPI and the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) say the record-breaking week coincides with a strong week for physical retail sales as music fans flocked to stores to buy new release CDs and vinyl singles.

Former X-Factor winner Leona Lewis entered the chart at #1 selling more than 218,000 copies of her single, "Bleeding Love," in the first week. With strong retail support for the song, more than 51 percent of those sales were on CD. McFly, who entered the chart at #3, did so by selling almost twice as many physical singles as digital. CD accounted for 54 percent and vinyl accounted for 12 percent of their singles sales last week.

BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor said, "Just three years ago, skeptics forecast the death of the single but instead singles have gone from strength to strength. New digital music services have combined with existing music stores to give music fans unprecedented choice as to how they discover, sample and buy new music."

Entertainment Retailers Association chairman Paul Quirk said, "Some music fans clearly want downloads, but given a choice between digital and physical, many music fans prefer the reliability and pride of ownership in a physical product. This week's chart is a reminder to all of us that we shouldn't write off physical formats just yet. After all, around 90 percent of recorded music sales [are] still on physical formats."
