Vienna, Austria (May 4, 2007)–Noted filmmaker Helmut Voitl will make the keynote address tomorrow at the AES 122nd Convention, as part of the opening ceremonies, happening from 12 noon-1:30 at the Austria Center in Vienna. Also during the Convention, on Monday at 3:00, George Massenburg will chair a 5.1 Mixing Techniques Workshop, with participating engineers Ronald Prent, of Belgium’s Galaxy Studios, and Jeff Wolpert, of Toronto’s Desert Fish.
Entitled: “Sound and Emotion: The Power of Audio in Storytelling,” Voitl’s AES keynote address will explore the critical role audio plays in the storytelling process. Voitl directed his first documentary series in 1968. From 1992 – 1996 he dramatized the Austrian Polar Expedition of 1872-1874, filming on location in the Russian High Arctic. In his presentation Voitl will address various methods for engaging sound to augment, embellish or contrast visuals. He is currently working on a new feature film, White Clouds Island, on location in the High Arctic.
Massenburg’s Workshop will present modern surround mixing methods and techniques including: “spreading out” multichannel sources; strategies for different media; use of the center channel; bass management; reverb, delay, and monitoring. On Tuesday, May 8th, the panelists will reconvene to present mixes, discuss techniques, and interact with attendees. Seats for these sessions will be limited, tickets will be available after the Workshop.
Prent’s credits include Elton John, Sting, David Bowie and Simple Minds. Wolpert’s film mixing work includes American Psycho, Clubland and Friday 13th Parts 5 & 6. He’s done extensive mixing for television, including the TV series as Beverly Hills 90210. His discography includes The Cowboy Junkies and Anne Murray.
Set for May 5 – 8 at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV), the 122nd AES Convention will provide a comprehensive range of audio technology. Special programs focusing on Live Sound, Broadcast Audio and Archiving will highlight three of the most important topics in audio today. Inter-related groups of Papers, Workshops and Tutorials have been developed to address the primary issues, Technologies and applications within these areas. The AES is the only international convention where audio is the main theme.
