Q: What is your new position, and what does it entail?
A: I am vice president, Pro Audio Sales at Group One Limited, responsible for DiGiCo, XTA, MC2 and Klang 3D In Ear monitoring sales in the United States.
Q: How has your background prepared you for your new role?
A: I have been fortunate enough to have toured around the world with some major bands and recorded with an artist that had built up a vault with a massive amount of unreleased material as well as huge hits for many artists. The requirements of these acts really pushed the technical limits at the time to achieve what was required for such complex shows. At that time, you could not just go online and purchase turnkey solutions; we had to design and custom-build them ourselves. We were also able to get the best pro-audio gear in the industry, so that, along with my electronics experience and years of using live and studio gear as a customer, made for an easy transition from touring into a pro-audio manufacturer sales role, [working with] the products that you love. Working for a band or a pro-audio manufacturer, you realize that if you take an approach to enjoy your job every day and surround yourself with others who have a great work ethic, it is amazing what you can get done.
Persistence is one thing that I have learned but did not realize at the time how valuable it is in life. In two instances, I wanted a particular job: One was for the above major artist out of Minneapolis who I wanted to work for; I kept pushing for about a year, pursuing any angle I could to finally get the chance. The exact same thing happened about 10 years later when I wanted to work with a pro-audio manufacturer, when that company realized it needed people from the industry who used the products and understood the markets.
All of that experience helped me land my job at Group One Limited with Jack Kelly, who was responsible for bringing the best British audio products that I had been using for so many years into the U.S. markets. At the time, Group One Limited had had DiGiCo for about a year and I found myself surrounded by a group of fantastic people who truly are in the industry for the right reasons, and that makes it easy to do your job and grow in your role.
Q: What new marketing initiatives are we likely to see from the company?
A: We have just released the CORE2 SD series upgrade that solidified DiGiCo as a true partner of its global customer base, and will be following up with the SD7 Quantum 7 engine upgrade later this year.
Q: What are your short- and long-term goals?
A: When we think about our company and where our focuses should be, we know that we are successful when we don’t consider ourselves as a sales channel but rather as a solutions company with a strong educational arm to our customers. This is achieved with our investment in our Masters Series Classes, on-site training, trade shows and willingness to share what we have learned with anyone willing to listen.
Q: What is the greatest challenge that you face?
A: To make certain that we never relax and get over-confident in what we do or what we can do. I think we all challenge each other as a company to make certain the next chapter of “wow, they are coming up with features and solutions before we ever knew we needed them” will continue to be written.
