New York, NY (April 3, 2015)—Jay Z’s recent $56 million purchase of Tidal made waves a few weeks ago, but this week saw the lossless streaming service make a splash in New York City with a press event that featured the rapper/entrepreneur, Alicia Keys, Madonna, Jack White, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, J Cole, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Beyoncé and more than 500 Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 headphones used to demonstrate the service.
Roc Nation, founded by acclaimed rapper Jay Z in 2008, acquired Tidal developer Aspiro in February. “Our mission goes beyond commerce, beyond technology; our intent is to preserve music’s importance in our lives,“ said Alicia Keys in formal remarks to the attendees.
After participating in the signing of a declaration to commit to “reestablish the value of music“ and “deliver high quality sound, video and editorial,“ the artists invited guests to circulate with their Momentum headphones and experience listening stations distributed throughout the venue. These included several stations streaming high-fidelity FLAC audio to tablets via the new Tidal platform, as well as stations demonstrating the music and audio technology of each decade from the ’50s to the present.
“Sennheiser has 70 years of experience creating cutting-edge technology for both capturing and listening to music, so we are keenly aware of the challenges that digital compression has created for those who value high-fidelity sound,” said Sennheiser CEO Andreas Sennheiser. “We are pleased that Tidal has made a commitment to lossless audio.”
The Momentum headphone line includes the Momentum Wireless and Momentum 2.0 wired models, each available in on-ear and over-ear configurations, and the Momentum In-Ear, a new earbud design. The Tidal streaming service is available in two subscription-only tiers, Tidal Hi-Fi offering the highest bitrate streaming and the newly-launched Premium tier that gives full access to Tidal’s catalog in standard definition and music videos in high definition.
