Los Angeles, CA (March 9, 2015)—L.A.-based hip-hop duo People Under the Stairs (PUTS) looked to Vintage King for guidance on microphone selection when they began work on their ninth album, 12 Step Program.
Teaming up with Vintage King LA sales associate Jeffrey Ehrenberg, PUTS members Thes One and Double K worked to find a mic that would capture both the duo and guest emcees.
“There is always the possibility that you can find something that sounds epic or different, or just has flavor,” Thes One says of the importance of a great mic. “There are a lot of classic hip-hop recordings where the sound of the vocals really makes the entire song. Maybe we can find our signature landmark microphone.”
With more than 20 microphones at PUTS disposal, the crew worked their way through the Vintage King Los Angeles mic room, trading off on verses and pieces of gear. In a unique twist on the classic mic shootout, VK rolled tape on each take and preserved all of the recordings for a behind the scenes view of the selection process. The video offers a glimpse of The P in action and the sound of each individual track, featuring top microphones from Flea, Manley, Telefunken, Wunder and more.
A week before the PUTS album release of 12 Step Program, pre-orders were announced on the band’s official website. Over the next 24 hours, the website’s server crashed four times due to an overload of eager fans. The album debuted at #56 on the iTunes charts, #7 on the iTunes rap charts, #11 on the Billboard Heatseeker charts, and #33 on the Billboard R&B/Rap Album charts. People Under the Stairs will be performing May 29 at Bottlerock in Napa, CA.
