Gone are the days when speakers small enough for one person to carry into a gig were typically underwhelming in terms of sonic performance. New materials for cabinetry and componentry, alongside advances in physical and electrical design, have afforded passive systems that are smaller, lighter and outperform their predecessors in remarkable ways. For active systems (active systems themselves being unheard of not all that long ago), digital signal processing and efficient digital amplification have further raised the performance levels and capabilities of portable PA systems. Affordability has also improved. One factor is the cost of purchase of a true system housed in a single cabinet, compared to the piecemeal approach formerly the only option. The impact of the lower weight and lower piece counts of modern component systems means less time and manpower spent lugging and setting up, with corresponding reductions in transportation costs. Considering the aspects of cost, complexity and performance, there’s never been a better time for end-users of portable PA gear.
