Al Schmitt Autobiography Set for November

Having worked with everyone from Dr. Dre to Paul McCartney, the legendary engineer shares his life and recording insights in new autobiography.

New York, NY (September 26, 2018)—Well, if you don’t know what to get the recording engineer in your life for the holidays, that problem just got solved. Legendary recording engineer Al Schmitt will release his autobiography, The Magic Behind the Music, on November 6, recounting a career that has seen him record and mix more than 150 gold and platinum records, earning 23 Grammy Awards for engineering in the process.

Over the years, Schmitt has worked with artists like Paul McCartney, Barbara Streisand, Dr. Dre, Diana Krall and Bob Dylan, to name only a few. Schmitt grew up around his uncle Harry’s New York City recording studio, and at nineteen landed his first engineering job at Apex Recording Studio.

Initially responsible for recording simple demos, Schmitt’s life took a dramatic turn when a session booked under the name “Mercer” turned out to be Duke Ellington and his band. In the years that followed, as Schmitt honed his skills at Atlantic Records, Prestige Records, and Bobby Shad’s “Sittin’ In” Records, his resume—and reputation—grew.

Not merely a recounting of a remarkable career, the book also shares some of Schmitt’s favorite tricks and techniques, from choosing microphones, effects and processors to setup diagrams from lauded recording sessions, and finding the best way to work with the artist.
