New system to create acoustic environments where sound sources can be placed and moved at will.

Backnang, Germany (February 8, 2018)—After five years of development, numerous trade show peeks and high-profile field testing, d&b audiotechnik has introduced d&b Soundscape, a new toolkit that combines the company’s loudspeaker system with object-based mixing and room emulation in an effort to create acoustic environments where sound sources can be placed and moved at will.

Soundscape aims to expand upon the traditional stereo image of left-right speaker positioning in a live setting by allowing engineers to place individual players’ musical performances in the mix to match their locations on stage.

The system is based around the DS100 Signal Engine, an audio processor with Audinate Dante networking and a 64x64 level and delay matrix with in- and output processing. Working within it are a pair of optional software modules—d&b En-Scene and d&b En-Space.

The former is a sound object positioning tool that allows the individual placement and movement of up to 64 sound objects so that each sound object corresponds both visually and acoustically.

Meanwhile, d&b En-Space is a room emulation tool which can add and modify reverberation signatures for a space, based on a variety of emulations derived from acoustic measurements of six performance venues.

Both software modules can be used and accessed via the long-running R1 Remote control software, and systems can easily be set up and configured with d&b ArrayCalc. d&b Soundscape can be used in either 180 stage proscenium set-ups or 360 configurations.

d&b Soundscape’s DS100 Signal Engine can be integrated with QLab by Figure 53 and TTA Stagetracker II by TTA, as well as with Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) systems in either VST or AU formats. The upcoming 4.2 update of QLab, a show control and playback software, will incorporate DS100 functionality into Network Cues and offer access to a number of DS100 functions, such as sound object positions, gain, delay and EQ, with further functions available in future updates. Meanwhile, the d&b DS100 already integrates with the TTA Stagetracker II performer tracking system, via the OSC protocol, using manually entered commands from a reference list.

Soundscape demo/pre-production facilities are now available at the d&b offices in Asheville, North Carolina.
