Aratechlabs unveils Arapolarmic 2.0, with Android support and 15 new mics

The update brings the total number of supported microphones up to 110

Aratechlabs has released version 2.0 of its Arapolarmic software, adding support for Android and additional iOS devices, a new user interface and support for 15 new microphone models. The update brings the total number of supported microphones up to 110.

Arapolarmic (pictured), a software program for tablets and mobile devices which uses ‘augmented reality’ to monitor the directivity of microphones, was demoed for PSNEurope last July (see EXCLUSIVE: Aratechlabs augments microphone placement skills). Developer Aratechlabs describes the software as “a new concept of multibrand audio tool that displays the polar pattern of a microphone in real time to reinforce its positioning relative to their enviroment (to discard or reinforce a sound source)”.

Users of the Arapolarmic include Patigonia Studios in California; the SAE Institute (28 schools throughout Europe); the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam; and The Blackbird Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Patigonia’s Greg Wurth, a Grammy-nominated producer, comments: “The Arapolarmic is a groundbreaking iOS app that allows you to visually see a microphone’s polar pattern. With this technology I’ve been able to make greater mic placement choices that optimise leakage and phase – this is a must-have tool for any recording engineer.”

Arapolarmic 2.1 will follow v2.0 in July, featuring mics from new manufacturers – Neumann and Sennheiser – and around 35 new microphones from Audix, beyerdynamic and Audio-Technica.

Arapolarmic 2.0 includes:

  • A new user interface
  • Improved performance,
  • Support for Android (≥4.0.3 tablets and phones) and additional iOS platforms (iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad mini, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus)
  • New brand: Microtech Gefell
  • ~15 new microphone models, from AEA, AKG, Microtech Gefell, Violet Design, Lewitt, beyerdynamic and Electro-Voice
  • Free version for iOS, with new App Store options (it is now possible to unlock specific microphone models without upgrading to the LE or PRO editions).
  • Special €29.99 launch price for Android devices as the Android version currently lacks in-app purchases. Aratechlabs will maintain the launch price until in-app purchases are available for Android
