Restart and rewind radio in BBC Sounds app

The app now includes a 'Live Restart' feature, allowing listeners to restart and rewind a live programme and listen from the beginning or pick it up where they wish

The BBC has announced that a new feature has been added to the BBC Sounds app today.

This update means that listeners can restart, and rewind, any live programme and listen to it from the beginning, or wherever they wish to pick it up. It is now also possible to pause the programme and later resume from where you left off, and the update includes autoplay, which automatically cues episodes for on-demand listening.

If you finish a series, or the app senses you’re in need of a healthy dose of radio, the BBC Sounds app will cue a recommendation based on what you’ve been listening to.

This Live Restart feature is now available for IOS and Android apps, and is, in fact, not yet available in the BBC iPlayer Radio app.

Other features coming soon to the BBC Sounds app include ‘track now playing’ information for live programmes; sub-categories (e.g. Crime Drama) and support for CarPlay, Android Auto and Chromecast.

The BBC Sounds app is a recent BBC broadcasting venture, launching at the end of 2018, and hosting live broadcasts of national and radio programmes from the London Eye.

Dan Taylor-Watt, head of BBC Sounds, commented: “We’ve been listening to feedback, and heard that being able to pause, rewind and restart live radio was a key feature listeners wanted to see added to the BBC Sounds app, giving them more control over their live listening experience.

“Additionally, autoplay will enable listeners to enjoy an uninterrupted on-demand listening experience, making it easier to listen to back-to-back episodes of a podcast or radio series and discover brilliant new audio without lifting a finger – something our live radio schedules have been doing for years.”
