The PLASA Foundation (formerly the ESTA Foundation), the charitable arm of the PLASA industry trade body, has announced the formation of Behind the Scenes (BTS) UK “to provide financial assistance to entertainment technology professionals, or their immediate family, who are seriously ill or injured”.
BTS is modelled on the similar Behind the Scenes (US) and Light Relief initiatives – the former of which has reportedly provided close to half a million dollars (£292,321 or €369,766) to American audio and lighting professionals in need since its foundation in 2006.
Lori Rubenstein of Behind the Scenes explains: “Behind the Scenes has a very wide remit. Anyone is eligible for assistance who has earned their living in the industry for at least five years, whether behind the curtain, behind the camera, on the road or working for companies that manufacture or supply entertainment technology products and services.
“The charity exists solely to aid those who work behind the scenes – it does not assist performers.”
Behind the Scenes will officially launch its fundraising activities at the PLASA London show (pictured – credit: Post Photographic Ltd) on 5–8 October, with a “behind-the-scenes golf day” following on the 15th. Registration opens on 21 July.
