The first dedicated UK exhibition by leading European sound sculpture artist Peter Vogel, entitled ‘The Sound of Shadows’, is currently taking place at the University of Brighton.
The exhibition, curated by Faculty of Arts academics Jean Martin and Conall Gleeson, features a number of Vogel’s interactive objects, which respond to the movement of gallery visitors.
At the heart of the show are two innovative and interactive large-scale works, the Sound Wall and the Shadow Orchestra.
Individually and cumulatively, Vogel’s work is said to address ‘established relationships between sculpture and sound, seeing and hearing, the static and the live.’ Composer and sound artist Dr Nye Parry has described Vogel’s pieces as “beautiful sound machines” which serve to raise questions about “the relationship between the spectator and the aesthetic object”.
The exhibition is at Faculty of Arts Gallery, Grand Parade, University of Brighton, until 7 November. Exhibition open hours are 12-8pm Mon-Fri and 10-4pm Sat.
