Composer Alev Lenz releases new album and sample library bundle with SA Recordings

Working closely with Lenz at every stage, Spitfire Audio presents an exclusive library featuring 20 original patches made up of Lenz's main compositional tools – her voice, piano, and experimental electronics

Alev Lenz by Lee Kirby

SA Recordings has released Alev Lenz’s album 3 for pre-order, with an interesting sonic concept of being accompanied by a brand new sample library of the same title.

As a songwriter, Lenz has forged a distinctive, other-worldly and often eerie sound, leading to her songs being featured in acclaimed dystopian Netflix dramas Black Mirror and Dark.

Working closely with Lenz at every stage, Spitfire Audio presents an exclusive library featuring 20 original patches made up of Lenz’s main compositional tools – her voice, piano, and experimental electronics. You can also reimagine and recreate through the interactive album element which features sounds taken from her album new album too.

The album, 3, is described as an exploration of empowerment and invites the listener into her world with candour and resilience. Through 12, almost completely acapella songs, the German-Turkish composer and producer explores both the personal and the political in her quest to better understand the breakdown of a relationship and the patriarchal constructs that still hold us captive.

Last week saw the release of the second single from the album, ‘The Chair’. The song is Lenz’s ode to American writer, feminist and civil rights activist Audre Lorde and her text ‘The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle The Master’s House’. ‘The Chair’ is a critique of oppressive systems yet to be dismantled. A music video will be released to accompany the single.

Where Lenz’s previous two LPs have explored a wider sonic palette from European classical to experimental electronics, 3 moves into more barren terrain. Her voice, intentionally distilled and extracted, is the focal point of the record along with her songwriting which is enhanced in selected songs by Grammy-award winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth. A creative bond that grew out of the ensemble’s encore performances of Lenz’s Black Mirror song ‘Fall into Me’ during their 2018 US tour.

The first single from the album ‘May the Angels’ was released on June 21 and is part of the soundtrack to season two of critically-acclaimed Netflix series Dark. The series also features songs from Peter Gabriel, Agnes Obel and Apparat, as well as a score composed by Ben Frost.

Lenz will be touring her latest album 3 across a number of cities internationally, using a local chorus for each performance. The ultimate desire is to cultivate trust between performers and audience, and Lenz insists on not rehearsing beforehand. This is an idea inspired by a theatre production written by David Greig. The debut US performance took place at Ecstatic Music Festival in New York in March 2019 with Grammy Award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus. The debut UK performance took place at St Mary’s Church at Brighton’s Great Escape festival with London Contemporary Voices in May 2019.

The 3 sample library features an interactive album element as well as unique sounds inspired by Lenz’s work as a composer. This is the first in a series of products tied in with SA album releases, focused on releasing artist-led libraries for music fans and music makers to create with.

The bundle that can be pre-ordered features the sample library, a limited edition 12-inch gatefold vinyl and digital download. The first 100 bundle orders will include a signed copy of the vinyl. The album bundle can be pre-ordered here.

Alev Lenz will release her third album 3 on September 27, 2019 via SA Recordings (Bespoke 12” & Digital Formats).
