IBC2016: Technica Del Arte launches uMi USB microphone interface

The new product was unveiled at IBC 2016

Having spent 30 years exhibiting at IBC, a highlight for Technica Del Arte at the 2016 show was the launch of uMi, a professional location broadcast and recording USB microphone interface, designed with the mobile reporter and musician in mind.

The compact uMi was designed in response to a number of key requests, says TDA president Joost Bloemen.

“Feedback from users in the field told us that the audio interfaces in smartphones, tablets and laptops are simply not high enough quality to satisfy broadcast demands. In addition, with users often needing to work in a hectic outside environment, presets can be changed to accommodate any condition with the simple touch of a button. This means that whatever microphone you choose to use, your results will always be the same,” he says.

Housed in a CNC-machined, laser trimmed aluminium casing, with a high quality Mogami Neglex quad microphone cable and female XLR plug, it includes a feature set and can be used in the harshest of environments.

Compatible with iOS, Android, Mac OS and Windows, uMi delivers natural, transparent 24+1 bit/192 kHz sound with ultra-low latency and A-D conversion. It features DSP – including Lo-cut, Phase, Parametric EQ, Gate and Limiter – which ensures any microphone always sounds the same, whatever the circumstances or platform.

DSP presets can be saved within the device via the free uMi Control application for Mac OS and Windows, allowing sound, colour and response to be adjusted with the push of a button. The unit’s flexible architecture means two uMi interfaces can be cascaded and used simultaneously in one system, a feature particularly suited to sports commentators, while lockable gain ensures that there are no surprise gain changes when the user switches apps or OS.

The unit is bus powered, meaning no need for external power or batteries, while also delivering adjustable phantom power.
