ISE 2019: d&b debuts developments including its first Milan product

d&b's innovations include its first Milan product, the DS20 audio network bridge, Revit files available to download that support Building Information Monitoring, and the R90 Touchscreen remote control for audio systems

At ISE 2019, d&b audiotechnik has launched a variety of developments, including its first product that offers connection to Milan protocol, the DS20 audio network bridge.

d&b’s first Milan product: the DS20 audio network bridge

The DS20 audio network bridge is the company’s first product connecting its loudspeaker systems to the open standards based Milan protocol. Milan is a deterministic network that inherits all the technical benefits of Audio Video Bridging (AVB) technology: improved reliability, optimum synchronisation and hassle free network setup. Together with AVID, L-Acoustics, Meyer Sound, and Biamp, among others, d&b has showcased the specifications for achieving seamless interoperation between any product implementing Milan.

Henning Kaltheuner, head of d&b Market Intelligence, explained: “AVB defines a set of technical standards developed by the IEEE, but what it doesn’t describe is how to implement them in a way that ensures interoperability between devices. Milan is the solution; a layer that completes an AVB network with a standards based, user driven deterministic network protocol that guarantees interoperability.”

The DS20 audio network bridge interfaces between Milan networks and AES3 digital audio signals, while also providing distribution of Ethernet control data. Metadata including Milan channel labels and cabling information is sent via the AES3 channel stream to the four channel d&b amplifiers.

Positioned in front of the amplifiers within the signal chain, this 1 RU device is equally suited to both mobile and installation environments. As well as providing an interface from the Milan audio network to the digital inputs of the d&b amplifiers via Ethernet, the DS20 provides four digital AES3 input channels for applications such as a break in from a front of house console.

The DS20 incorporates a fully AVB enabled integrated 5-port switch, offering a primary and redundant network. This provides extended connectivity for a laptop to control the d&b amplifiers using the R1 Remote control software via the OCA (Open Control Architecture) protocol.

Revit files provide support for Building Information Modelling

With the increasing importance of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the widespread adoption of Revit software, d&b has made available Revit files that allow consultants, architects and system integrators to include d&b loudspeakers in a Revit based BIM process at any stage of a project.

“Like all d&b systems, d&b Revit files have been created with maximum workflow efficiency in mind. Using d&b Revit families, any project participant can expect a remarkably accurate visual representation of a d&b system within a model, and a simplified workflow from planning to ordering,” commented Andreas Reimer, d&b product specialist.

d&b Revit files provide photorealistic detailed 3D data for each loudspeaker, including texture, non-branded renderings to support a neutral tender process, and the option to visualise special colour versions. An information rich database includes the complete accessory package for holistic planning and determining quantities as well as a parts list, including d&b parts numbers simplifying the order process.

d&b Revit files are available to download from d&b’s website.

R90 Touchscreen remote control

d&b has launched the R90 Touchscreen remote control, simplifying control of installed applications where adjustments to audio systems must be performed by staff with limited technical knowledge.

The 7” panel PC grants any user one-touch control of predefined functions – power, mute, level, grouping and recall of up to nine AmpPresets. All control functions in R90 work independently of the d&b R1 Remote control software, eliminating the possibility of accidentally altering any of the carefully balanced system settings.

“An installed sound system can be quite comprehensive, so d&b wanted to develop a tool that would open up its general operation to non-technical venue staff,” explained d&b project manager Wolfgang Schulz. “The R90 enables most of the functions you would need to use on a daily basis to be accomplished with one touch. Of course, it also had to be something that was also simple for system integrators to incorporate into either a new or pre-existing installation.”

Setup and configuration of R90 project settings can be accomplished quickly and easily, and when running AES70/OCA, the R90 Touchscreen remote control can be easily integrated into any d&b system (using up to fifteen amplifiers) without the need for additional programming.
