Exclusive: L-Acoustics’ new head of touring Tony Szabo on how his sound engineer experience will benefit his new role

As well as being an experienced sound engineer, L-Acoustics' newly-appointed head of touring application Tony Szabo has also worked in the financial side of the industry

L-Acoustics’ newly appointed head of touring application Tony Szabo has spoken exclusively to PSNEurope about his career leading up his recent appointment.

Szabo, who joins L-Acoustics from UK partner Adlib Audio Solutions, has more than 25 years’ experience in the pro audio business.

Most recently, he served as senior systems engineer at Adlib, designing systems for tours and festivals, mentoring the systems engineer team and leading technology acquisition decisions. Before this, he has worked in a variety of roles from monitor technician to FOH engineer, working with top names in the music business including David Bowie and Kylie Minogue.

“I’ve been in the business in some form or another since I started university in 1984,” Szabo told PSNEurope. “Between then and now, I’ve worked on projects from the smallest local shows up to the biggest international acts. Mixing a university band with a car full of PA gear, all the way through to Olympics opening and closing ceremonies with more than four billion worldwide watching on TV. Added to that are more than two decades of touring with artists at arena level and in over 50 countries.

“Over these years I have also spent time in developmental roles inside sound companies which has given me an understanding of the financial side of the business – many hours researching and designing and then pushing for new technologies or packaging and having to justify the expense. I’ve also been the person doing the purchasing and acquiring the gear while keeping it on track financially.”

In his new role, Szabo will work directly with Florent Bernard, director of applications, touring, to deploy the application strategy and work with L-Acoustic’s network of partners worldwide.

He continued: “Being able to encompass the points of view of touring sound engineers and rental company management will help me to bring a global perspective to the touring application strategy at L‑Acoustics. I hope to bring this understanding of both the company and my experience working as a touring engineer to my new role at L‑Acoustics.

“I look forward to working with the amazing group of professionals that make up the L‑Acoustics partner network worldwide. I expect that my decades of experience will be an asset to them, and I also look forward to learning alongside them as they innovate to bring the best sound possible to the world’s highest profile events.”
