PMT’s 25-year celebration leads to Potentially Massive Treasure

We are now entering a period of prize-giving!

Professional Music Technology (PMT) – arguably the saviour of MI retailing in the UK – is giving away £25,000 worth of prizes to celebrate 25 years of business.

PMT was started by current owners Simon Gilson and Terry Hope in August 1991, with a small shop in Southend. Over a dozen locations and several strategic acquisitions later, PMT is now the UK’s largest musical instrument and equipment retailer.

Gilson and Hope have racked up more than 60 years in the business between them. Co-owner, Gilson, says: “We started with a 1,000 square feet, as sixteen-year-old, long-haired rockers and a mass of front, and used our association with just about every musician for miles around to build a business from nothing. Now, we are the largest musical instrument retailer in the UK with 14 branches and counting, over 200,000 square foot of retail space and 170 staff.”

PMT has established ‘Houses of Rock’ in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Southend, East London, Oxford, Cambridge, Newcastle, Northampton, Norwich and Bristol, and opened branches in Cardiff and Portsmouth and with more stores planned to open before year end.

Part of PMT’s growth has stemmed from the shrewd purchase of (sometimes failed) MI retail operations in the UK. Gilson and Hope bought three Sound Control stores when the company went into administration in April 2008; bought online seller Dolphin Music in 2010 when that folded; bought SoundsLive in Newcastle in August 2015, and Nevada Music in Portsmouth earlier this year.

There are big plans for the 25th anniversary of PMT, which include £25,000 worth of prizes to be won from the world’s leading musical instrument brands, plus special store discounts will be given to two customers visiting their local shop on the anniversary date in August.

Here’s how you stand a chance of winning:

“Customers wishing to enter the giveaway must purchase a pack of charity playing cards from their nearest PMT shop. Those who find a silver-coloured card in their packet will win £1,000 worth of musical instruments and equipment. There are 25 silver-coloured cards available, and each purchase of a pack of cards will result in a £1 donation being made to the Music for All charity. In addition, PMT will match-fund every purchase with an additional £1 donation to the charity.”
