SSE Audio’s founding directors, John and Heather Penn, have been recognised with an award at the UK finals of EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2016.
The winners were judged on their entrepreneurial spirit, financial performance, innovation, national and global impact, strategic direction, personal integrity and influence.
The judges described SSE Audio Group as “one of the most respected companies in the field, having turned their hobby into a business by matching their undoubted technical expertise with true entrepreneurial spirit.”
The Penn’s had won the Midlands regional award in June before the national final in October.
SSE director Heather Penn: “We started out 40 years ago supplying audio equipment in ‘rock n roll’, and weren’t really considered to be part of the business community. But over the decades, the UK music and creative industries have delivered a great deal to the UK economy and we are delighted to be acknowledged as part of this. Who would have thought that a couple of rock n rollers could win such a prestigious business award!”
Collecting the award, John Penn was asked about their route to success. He says: “When your back’s against the wall, move the wall!”
With the business started in a garage in 1976, earlier this year, SSE Audio were named by the Stock Exchange as amongst the top 1000 companies to inspire Britain.
