SSE remodels JBL for London’s Disco

Inception Group's newest venue was once the home of the exclusive member's club, Bureau. SSE Audio Group repurposed and augmented the venue's existing JBL Contractor Control series loudspeakers for the new retro-themed Disco.

SSE Audio Group has repurposed and augmented a JBL sound system at Inception Group’s newest London venue, Disco. The retro-disco themed club is the brainchild of Inception Group’s Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling who took over the former Bureau, an exclusive members club behind London’s Carnaby Street. Emma Bigg, who leads SSE’s installation division, explained: “When Inception bought the venue a lot of the kit came with it, including the JBL speakers. We were able to fit new grilles and brackets and give the system a complete service. “The owners were keen to stay with JBL because it’s a brand of recognition and quality. The venue is very design led and fairly compact so everything needed to be carefully thought out.” SSE project manager Dan Seal designed the basement venue into a three-zone system: four of the venue’s original JBL Control 29s are again flown – this time augmented by a further four newly purchased Control 29s – over a black and white chequered dancefloor. In the general seating lounges are Control 28Ts (transformer versions) along with JBL Control 25s used for infills and JBL Control 23Ts used in ancillary areas. The pre-existing Control 28 provides DJ referencing in the newly created DJ booth, populated by industry standard tools. Inception Group’s Stirling concluded. “Both Charlie and I wanted to create a venue that transcends the entire Disco era, and JBL was one the iconic brands that featured so heavily as the idiom developed.”
