Studio City, CA (August 22, 2016)—Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) and Cinema Audio Society (CAS) are ready for the third annual Mix Presents Sound for Film, an all-day exhibition and conference spotlighting technologies and techniques behind sound for picture from production to playback. The event will be held September 17 at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, CA.
Sponsored by Mix Magazine, this year’s event will focus on workflow changes prompted by the boom in film and television production, and emergence of new entertainment media, including virtual reality. Event sponsors also include Avid, Harmon, JBL, Meyer Sound, ADX by Audionamix, Yamaha Commercial Audio and Lectrosonics.
A unique opportunity to learn from the best minds in sound, Mix Presents Sound for Film has attracted overflow crowds in each of its first two years. “It’s a chance for sound artists to network, exchange ideas with their peers, and learn about new and emerging sound technologies in a friendly and intimate setting,” said MPSE president Tom McCarthy. “If you are passionate about sound, this is a can’t-miss event.”
MPSE will host a panel discussion titled “Sound Inspiration within the Storytelling Process.” Leading sound designers and editors will talk about creativity in sound and discuss moments when sound becomes the driving factor in the story. Panelists will include Will Files, MPSE; Mark P. Stoeckinger, MPSE; Paula Fairfield, MPSE; and Ben L. Cook, MPSE.
CAS will host a sound mixing panel entitled “Workflow for Musicals in Film and Television Production.” Its focus will be on live recording and other techniques for giving musical productions a more organic sound than in the past. Glen Trew, CAS will moderate with panelists including Gary Bourgeois, CAS; production mixer Phil Palmer, CAS; music editor David Klotz; and Pro Tools music recording and playback specialist Gary Raymond.
“Building an Immersive Room: Small, Medium and Large” will feature a panel of engineers, studio designers and system integrators. They will describe current requirements for building a recording stage capable of producing a compelling immersive soundtrack.
Other features will include:
• Audio for VR Room: Presented in the Kim Novak Theatre, a Dolby and Auro 3D-equipped re-recording stage. New tools and techniques for the ultimate in Immersive Sound.
• Sound Reel Showcase: Presented in the William Holden Theatre, a Dolby and Auro 3D-equipped re-recording stage. Film studios present 10-minute reels of their showcase films with introductions by the sound teams.
• Production Sound Pavilion:Presented in the iconic Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage. Top production sound mixers show what?s in their sound carts, and top manufacturers show the latest in wireless, microphone and recorder technologies.
