Raleigh, NC (July 11, 2014)—Trailblazer Studios provided original music and handled post production for Discovery Channel‘s Mini Monsters special, which premiered May 31.
In addition to the original music composition, Trailblazer Studios’ Willie Elias handled the sound editing and mixing, Emmy Award-winner Bonnie Cutler edited the picture in collaboration with Zakin and Halprin, and Alan Maynard handled online editing for the show. Executive producer Leah Welsh orchestrated the entire post process making this truly a team effort.
Mini Monsters is a Discovery Channel/BBC co-production. For Discovery Channel, Jonathan Halperin is producer/writer with Robert Zakin as executive producer and John Cavanagh as producer. Mini Monsters was originally developed by the BBC for UK distribution. To appeal to the U.S. market, Discovery tapped Peter Dinklage to narrate and brought on Trailblazer Studios to create custom music and re-cut the film.
Using location filming, visual effects and state-of-the-art cameras that were specially developed for the project, the two-hour Mini Monsters special shows the life and death struggles of nature’s small creatures, from their point of view. To deliver an equally dynamic musical score, Trailblazer composer Aaron Keane collaborated with Raleigh composer Jim Crew for a mostly orchestral sound with recorded live musicians.
“Our challenge was to make the music play a major role and serve as a second narrator, not just as background music,” said Trailblazer executive producer, Eric Johnson. “It had to be written specifically to the picture, choreographed note for note with the action happening on screen. The music became its own character.
“The sensibilities between British and U.S. audiences are just so different,” said Johnson, “in musical taste and style, as well as script and voice narration—not just the accent but also the attitude. We had to ratchet up the humor and add more edge.”
