Examining the Art of Genius at AES

What defines the art of genius? PSNEurope—the European relative of Pro Sound News—offers one possible definition: It’s the moment when the clouds part, when the route to success is clear; the “lightbulb moment,” when everything you knew before has changed, and nothing will be the same again.

What defines the art of genius? PSNEurope—the European relative of Pro Sound News—offers one possible definition: It’s the moment when the clouds part, when the route to success is clear; the “lightbulb moment,” when everything you knew before has changed, and nothing will be the same again.

This coming Saturday, October 1, 10.45am at the 141st AES Convention in Los Angeles, PSNEurope editor Dave Robinson will host the magazine’s first Genius! Live workshop. The session will celebrate these unique moments of clarity with a number of leading names in the industry, each of whom you might just want to call a “genius.” What were they doing when the lightbulb moment arrived? And what happened next? On the panel: Pat Quilter, one of the founders of QSC Audio; Dave Gunness, the man behind Gunness Focusing, who has worked with EAW and PreSonus and now runs Fulcrum Acoustic; and Joe Bull, one of the original ‘SADiE’ DAW team, and now owner of JoeCo (and the BlackBox Recorder).

The event, in Room 404AB, will be based on the tried-and-tested “PSNPresents” events in the UK, with host Dave Robinson (editor of PSNEurope, aka Pro Sound News Europe) ensuring no one gets bogged down in equations but everyone leaves entertained and informed.

“It’s first time I’ve hosted an event at the prestigious US AES Convention, so I’m very much looking forward to a return to Los Angeles,” says Dave Robinson. “We’ll be talking about the whole notion of inventing, in pro audio and into the wider world. Please come along on Saturday morning to see what these very clever men have to tell us mere mortals.”

The event coincides with the publication of Genius!2, the second special supplement from PSNEurope that celebrates innovations and inventors in the pro audio world. An extended distribution of the title will be available at the AES, and online shortly afterwards.
