Home Recording, Beverly Hills-Style

This spacious home studio in Beverly Hills has been used to record Ozzy, Red Hot Chili Peppers and others.

Beverly Hills, CA—Anyone who records at home takes some pride in their setup, regardless of whether they’re using Garageband on an iPad or have a substantial, dedicated space for work. So picture a home studio so nice that it’s been used by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Carlos Santana and Ozzy Osborne for recording. Yeah, it’s pretty OK. It’s also in the infamous 90210 zip code, and was recently on the market for a cool $8.5 million.

Inside the Studio

The home studio at 702 N. Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills has a lot of history. According to its real estate listing, the 1922 Spanish-style house was once owned by Bobby Darin (“Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover,” “Beyond the Sea”), and later by Noel Blanc, son of the legendary voice actor Mel Blanc—AKA, the voices of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Barney Rubble and dozens of other classic animated characters.

Currently, the 6,921-square-foot home is owned by guitarist/producer Takahiro “Tak” Matsumoto, who bought the property in 2011 for $3.64 million. One-half of B’z, Japan’s biggest hard rock act ever with more than 82 million albums sold, Matsumoto won Best Pop Instrumental Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2010 for Take Your Pick, his collaborative album with Larry Carlton.

Aside from the fully permitted studio, the house itself has five bedrooms, six bathrooms (including one in the studio), an attached gym/office, a pool, spa, three driveways and more, all on a 17,000-square-foot corner lot.
